Resident of the Month:
Velda McGinnis Bass
Velda McGinnis Bass was born in Parker’s Landing, Pennsylvania in 1925 to Mark and Daisy McGinnis. At an early age, her family moved to Paintsville, Kentucky. She grew up in Paintsville with her three sisters. When WWII began, she moved with her sister’s family to Baltimore, Maryland. She did her part to help in the war effort by working as a "Rosie the Riveter" at an aircraft factory. It was during that time that she met her future husband, Joe Bass, at her friend’s family boarding house. He left Berry College to work in the shipyard in Baltimore at the onset of the war. As fate would have it, they immediately began dating and soon afterward married. After serving in the army during the war, Joe eventually convinced Velda to move their young family to the Bass family farm in the Center Point community just north of Carrollton. There they reared their five children… Chuck, Hugh, Tim, Debbie, and Chip. Joe worked for over thirty years at Southwire. Velda was a stay-at-home mother until their last child was in school. At that point she began working in the school cafeteria at Temple High School where she worked for many years (as well as Temple Elementary and Bremen High School) eventually becoming the manager/ dietician. They both enjoyed raising Black Angus cattle on the farm. In their retirement, they traveled extensively throughout the United States visiting every state capital in the contiguous United States. They also traveled to Scotland, Ireland, and the UK. They were both active members of the Temple Church of Christ. Shortly before Joe’s death in 2004, they celebrated their 60th anniversary. Velda remained on the family farm until she recently broke her arm and moved to The Stewart House. To date, she has fifteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two great grandchildren on the way.
